What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

Last month we explained that Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the ongoing process to improve website programming code, website content, and incoming links on a website in order to optimize the website's search ranking for relevant key search terms with search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

This month we will dig deeper into the importance of content on your website.

How do search engines analyze website content?

Each web page on your website may contain words, images, videos, links, or other forms of "content". Search engines use automated tools called "spiders" to analyze your website's content so they can determine what each web page is about.

Items such as images and videos do not appear to have words that can be read so how can a search engine understand what they are? Each image and video has a "tag" associated with it in the code which is essentially its filename. The tag is read by the search engines as part of understanding what your webpage is about.

For example, if you have an image of a dentist working on a patient and the image is named image01.jpg (which is quite common), the search engine thinks that image is about the word image. To enhance SEO the image should be named something like dentist-working-on-patient.jpg. This more descriptive filename tells the search engine that image is about a dentist working on a patient.

Words and links are more straight forward in that the search engines simply read the words to understand what that webpage is about. After a web page has been examined the search engines will determine what the web page is primarily about by analyzing the key word density.
